Bodoe (Bodø) |
|
|
|
Bodø was founded in May 1816 as an alternative trading town to Bergen, for fishermen in the North.
At this time Norway was still ruled by Denmark, and a Danish commission was responsible for the development of the region.
Hundholmen/Bodoe was chosen because of its central location, and because it was rich in timber.
By the end of the 1800’s a lot of new businesses had been established in the town: a trading bank, canning factories, shipyards and steamship companies. Bodoe had established itself as a thriving trading and communications centre.

| Bodoe is also one of the cities in Northern Norway with the longest tradition for higher education. Today Bodoe has 45.000 inhabitants including 5.000 students.
It is also the county town of the region and home to the regional military defence organisation.
Bodoe's city crest symbolizes the midnight sun, illustrating that Bodoe is the first city north of the Arctic Circle and the southernmost city in Norway that sees the midnight sun.
Bodoe is surrounded by mountains and fjords and is located with its “face” pointing to the mighty Lofoten group of islands.
Nature offers plenty of activities such as hiking, mountain climbing, canoeing and kayaking and fishing.
