FIRST LEGO League is a technology tournament for children.
In 2006 the tournament engaged close to 100.000 children round the world. The tournaments round the world are practiced with slightly different profiles, but the basic principles and this year’s theme is the same for everybody. The Scandinavian model stands out as a good example in this respect. Here one gives the children a work period lasting eight weeks in order to solve the task which consists of two parts: a theoretical part and a practical part. The theme should be shed light on using the fields of mathematics, technology and natural science. The project starts in September and the tournament is held in November. In Norway, Sweden and Denmark, a Scandinavian final is also carried out 21 days later.
FLL has the following profile;
- Design and build a robot during the 8-week period
- Make theoretical background studies
- Carry out profile work and find sponsors
- Make a report/diary
The team is set up consisting of children in the age group 10-16 years old and a team leader. After 8 weeks: the tournament – the robot competition and the theoretical presentation.
As oposed to traditional task solution in which one often searches for the “right” answer, FLL requires;
- problem solution
- the will to take risks
- a high level of experimentation
- being able to tackle failiures underway
and finally; coming up with a solution that one reckons to be optimal in relation to the
framework conditions under which one is operating.
The children work on a task which has many “correct solutions”. FLL has a lot in common with the entrepreneurial process, and therefore contains plenty of innovation. On the tournament day the teams meet the judges from business. Here teamwork, co-operation, creative problem solutions, good design, the guts to keep pressing ahead, good mechanical construction and programming, good insight into problem complexes, enthusiasm and the ability to make one’s mark will all be assessed.
The tournaments are arranged by operational partners who are responsible for the arrangements in their various regions. The institute FIRST Scandinavia is reponsible for Norway, Sweden and Denmark. Correspondingly other institutes exist in Europe responsible for their countries. The 3 largest institutes are
- Hands on Technology (Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Hungary)
- Stichting Techniekprom otie (Benelux)
- FIRST Hand Technology (UK).
Moreover, there are corresponding organisations in Turkey, Spain, France and Iceland. In the other parts of the world corresponding structures exist with organisations responsible for arranging FLL according to given criteria.
